Diving in Northern Iceland

Strytan.is are located in Akureyri but we can plan dive trips all around Iceland. We want divers to stay with us for more than one day so if you are interested in dive holyday in Iceland we will plan your trip and make you a offer. If you are going to dive in Iceland we know the condictions in the sea so we can help you plan your dive. We can pick you up at the airport in Keflavík or in Seyðisfjörður if you are coming with the ferry. If you need some place to stay we can also assist you finding the best prices and places.

Strytan
The only geothermal cone found in the world you can scuba dive, the other are found at 3000m or deeper. Strytan is rising from the the seafloor at a depth of 65m to 15m under the surface so the Strytan in Eyjafjörður is 50m high. Around 100 liters of freshwater per sec at 72°c is comming from the cone. The professor at the Univercity in Akureyri tells us the fresh water from the cone is 1100 years old. The first underwater protected area in Iceland.

Arnarnesstrytur
Are group of small cones rising from the seafloor at depth from 18-46 meters. This is the second underwater protected area in Iceland and the protected area is 400 meters wide and 1000 meters long. We usually dive at the shallowest cone and feed the cod and the wolffish with the shell Artica islandica. In the end of the dive we take hot water on a termo from the cone to make some coco in the boat after the dive. The 78°c hot fresh water steaming from the cone is 1100 years old and taste little sweet. In this dive you can see lot of the sea animals living at hard bottom close to the arctic circle.

Ásbyrgi-Dettifoss-Lake Mývatn
In this tour you will not only dive you will see some of the most beautiful parts of Iceland. The tour starts from Akureyri. First stop is the new discovered crack Nesgjá and lake Lón where we dive. Next stop is the 17°c hot river Litla Á where you can snorkel or dive. The river is known for the big touts and warm springs. We visit Dettifoss the 100m wide waterfall that have a drop of 44m to the canyon Jökulsárgljúfur. Dettifoss is the largest waterfall in Europe it terms of volume discharge. Then we stop at Lake Mývatn were we visit Krafla, Námuskarð and take a Nature Bath in the geothermal spa or the warm cracks.

Grímsey
When traveling to Grímsey you can take the ferry that goes three times every week, take the flight or sail with privat boat. If you are sailing to Grímsey you usually see some whales on the way. We cant count the Puffins and Guillemots birds in the sea and cliffs around the island. When you are on the island you will meet my favorit bird the Arctic Tern. Usually the could arctic sea is blue and clear and when diving you will see Cod, flat fish like Plaice and big steams of Pollock. This is the only place where I have been diving with Guillemots birds and Puffins in visibility over 20 meters.

The wreck Standard
In the harbour almost in the center of Akureyri is this old 60 meters long and 11 meters wide ship Standard built in the USA in the year 1874. It sank in the beginning of the world war I but at that time it was owned by German fishing company. Usually its lot of fish around Standard and in one dive I have seen elleven types of fish.

Dive package in North Iceland
North Iceland has plenty of amazing dive sites like Strýtan, Grímsey, Hrísey, Ásbyrgi, Hjalteyri and Litlaá. One of the nice things when doing a dive trip for a couple of days in Iceland is that apart from the diving, there are lots of fantastic things to see on land. Like Lake Myvatn, which is a beautiful area with many things to see and Dettifoss, Goðafoss as well. Also we offer a variety of other activities to do while staying in North-Iceland such as horse riding, sea fishing, super jeep tours, whale spotting and river rafting.

We offer a 1-7-days tour, which is open for everybody to book. The tours include transfer, accommodation, diving-guide and diving gear.
